Writing in the spaces between

Hisham Abdullah is a Malaysian author and member of the Film Directors’ Association of Malaysia (FDAM). He has received numerous accolades, including the Malaysia Press Institute Award, Anugerah Seri Angkasa, and the UNICEF International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award for the East Asia and Pacific region. His work has represented Malaysia at the EBS International Documentary Festival in South Korea.

In 2012, he directed Dikir Blues USA, a cross-cultural documentary about a Malaysian dikir barat singer blending traditional music with American blues along the Blues Highway. Funded by a U.S. Department of State grant, the film was shot in the U.S. and aired on TV3 in Malaysia. He was a producer of Majalah 3 and the first director of the Jejak Rasul documentary series on TV3.

Blending real-world and cross-cultural storytelling with fiction, Hisham sees nonfiction and fiction as two paths converging in the search for meaning—found in the stories we tell, the facts we remember, and, most often, in the spaces between.
